Todd Energy to set up a $100 million gas-fired power station alongside its McKee oil and gas production station

Todd Energy is mulling the construction of an $100 million gas-fired power station along with its McKee oil and gas production station near Waitara in Taranaki. Richard Tweedie, Todd managing director said the new station would be capable of generating up to 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power up to 100,000 homes.

Speaking to the Taranaki Daily News, Tweedie said Todd Energy is signing the contracts this week. According to him, the firm has already made the necessary arrangements with GE for the supply of two 50MW gas-fired turbines, and is currently planning for the construction work to begin fairly early next year. The project will include the erection of about 17km of power lines that will feed electricity to the Transpower network.

Tweedie said Todd Energy planned to have the station fully-commissioned by 2012, in time to meet winter's peak demands for power. A hundred megawatts will be significant peaking capacity, but Todd Energy intends running base load as well. It'll allow the firm to use a considerable amount of gas each year from its own resources, said Tweedie. Todd confirmed that the decision to build the new power station was the result of growing confidence that its Mangahewa onshore field contains substantial amounts of gas.

100% kiwi owned and operated, Todd Energy is a leading energy producer and provider focused on meeting New Zealand’s energy demands well into the future.

As the only truly vertically integrated energy company in New Zealand, Todd Energy owns and operates its own natural gas, oil, LPG, electricity, cogeneration and solar hot water heating assets, enabling it to manage the entire flow of energy from gas field to customer or from hydro generation to household. Employing over 300 dedicated and passionate staff, the firm continues to push the boundaries to deliver total energy solutions to its industrial, commercial and residential customers.

Todd Energy has the ability to create individual solutions to meet the specific needs of its wide range of customers from world-beating industry leaders and New Zealand's largest electricity generators to energy retailers supplying family homes and local businesses. Todd Energy holds interests in producing fields that account for some 90% of New Zealand’s annual hydrocarbon production and is one of New Zealand's leading energy producers.

Todd Energy has interests in major oil and gas fields including Maui, Kapuni, McKee, Mangahewa, Pohokura and Maari.
